Poker industry is famous for her brilliant minds, sometimes despicably unappreciated despite a good mixture of genes and all hard work invested into the game. The following is a list of top five poker players, who got high exposure due to their polished skills and unique moves implemented into the poker gaming.
1) Men Nguyen, "The Master", has an interesting story about how he got started playing poker. He got acquainted with poker game during a trip to Las Vegas and was hooked on the game ever since. The main reason that he excels in poker is that he prepares himself beyond what other people would even think of doing. He puts in more work than the average person. Most people just show up, Men is better than most because he starts the hour before, the day before, the week before his opponent. Some of his accomplishments include first place in Seven Card Stud and Lowball at the 2003 World Series of Poker, first place in the Omaha Hi-Lo and the Pot Limit Holdem events at the World Poker Challenge. In 2002 he was ranked number five on Card Players list of the most successful tournament players in poker.
2) Thomas J. Cloutier was an athlete that attended the University of California at Berkeley on a scholarship for football and baseball and played in the Rose Bowl in 1959. He is the only person in the history of the World Series of Poker to have won events in all three types of Omaha played at the World Series - Pot Limit High, Limit High, and Limit 8-or-Better High-low split. Despite winning dozens of tournaments, he has never won the main event of the World Series of Poker, although he has placed four times in the top 5, including two 2nd place finishes. Cloutier is also the co-author of four books: "Championship Tournament Practice Hands", "Championship Holdem", "Championship Omaha " and "Championship No-Limit and Pot Limit Holdem".
3) Phil Hellmuth is probably the one poker player who achieved the most in the shortest period of time. He is the youngest person to ever achieve his first World Series of Poker title at the age of 24. We can consider Phil Hellmuth true businessmen because he is involved in many endeavors away from the felt. He is the author of many articles for Card Player Magazine and poker books, including "Play Poker like the Pros", "Bad Beats and Lucky Draws" and "The Greatest Poker Hands ever played". Hellmuth is also a spokesperson for and player at Ultimate Bet, an online poker room. More recently, he has worked with Oakley to develop his signature series of poker style sunglasses as well as a clothing line.
4) Johnny Chan is one of pokers best known names. He is a legend in the poker world for winning ten World Series of Poker gold bracelets. But more impressively is that two bracelets were from back to back Championship events in 1987 and 1988. Amazingly he almost won in 1989 too, but finished second to Phil Hellmuth. He is not only known by poker players, but also by the movie "Rounders" for playing himself.
5) Phil "The Unabomber" Laak may not have decades of poker experience under his belt, but his television tournament appearances have made him one of the more popular players on the circuit today. This 32-year-old Irish-born poker star hosts a television poker show, dates a movie star, and even has a doll of his likeness selling out on eBay every day. He has reached a high level of success that plenty of people would envy, but it was far from inevitable that Laak would end up involved in the poker boom.
